THE LAST SUPPER - LEONARDO DA VINCI
The attraction of the abbey is the life-size replica of Da Vinci's Last Supper. The huge painting was bought by the abbey in 1544/45 to decorate the old church. Even back then this was one of the most famous pieces of art in history! Rubens, Van Dyck, Jordaens, all the great Flemish masters from the Baroque came to Tongerlo to see the Da Vinci!
The work itself has had a very turbulent history and thanks to the fathers of Tongerlo (and a local farmer at the end of the 18th century) the painting has survived and can still be admired in the abbey.
Today, the painting is N° 3 on the list of top Flemish artworks, protected by law and a must see for anyone who loves art.

In 2018, professor. J.-P. Isbouts, the driving force behind the recent research on the painting, made this interesting documentary for National Geographic. It shows and tells the story of the different replicas made of the original fresco in Milan. Scroll to 29:30 - 36:30 for the Tongerlo version.
