WAR MEMORIAL FORT BREENDONK
Fort Breendonk is an early 20th century stronghold, build by the Belgian army to protect the port town of Antwerp. Nothing special in itself - there are dozens preserved - if not for the SS, the Sipo-SD. They put it into use as an Auffanglager (a prison) for Jewish and political prisoners. Nearly 3600 prisoners were subjected to a regime of violence, starvation, forced labour and dehumanisation. More than half of the population would not survive the prison or the deportation to German, Austrian or Polish camps. Today, the Memorial is one of the best preserved witnesses of Nazi-terror in the whole of Europe. A visit to the Fort should be on anyone's bucket list!
